ECONOMIC INTEGRATION IN CENTRAL ASIA: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES

This paper explores the current state and prospects of economic integration in Central Asia, focusing on practical barriers and cooperative opportunities among Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The research identifies key non-tariff barriers such as inconsistent regulations, slow border procedures, and fragmented transport coordination. Case studies like the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway illustrate both the potential and pitfalls of regional connectivity projects. The paper argues for a “function-first” approach - gradual, technical cooperation that strengthens trust and efficiency without compromising sovereignty. A proposed two-year plan focuses on border reforms and railway coordination to achieve measurable progress.
