HISTORY OF FINE-STAPLE COTTON BREEDING AND SEED BREEDING IN THE UZBEK SSR (1930–1970)

Abstract

The article provides a scientific-institutional and economic analysis of the history of the formation and development of fine-staple cotton selection and seed production in the Uzbek SSR in the 1930–1970s. The study highlights the fundamental role of the Research Institute of Cotton Selection and Seed Breeding named after G.S. Zaitsev, the scientific achievements of Uzbek selection scientists, and the issues of regional specialization in cotton cultivation. The paper analyzes the dynamics of creation and integration into production fields of the "S-6030" cotton variety, which possessed high technological indicators and genetic resistance to fusarium and verticillium wilt diseases, considered a revolution in agrarian science of its time. Furthermore, the economic efficiency indicators achieved through the integration of fine-staple cotton into the republican textile industry, its price coefficient, and exports to socialist countries are revealed.
