Abstract

Dehydration is one of the most frequently encountered conditions and accompanies a wide spectrum of acute and chronic diseases. According to current publications, the prevalence of hypohydration among therapeutic and surgical patients ranges from 25% to 50%, while in intensive care units it exceeds 60% [Williams et al., 2020]. The physiological consequences of dehydration include reduced circulating blood volume, plasma hyperconcentration, impaired microcirculation, and decreased perfusion of vital organs, particularly the kidneys and the brain [Hollis & Patel, 2021].
