THE USE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TOOLS IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES

The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has significantly influenced the field of foreign language education. AI-powered tools such as intelligent tutoring systems, automated writing evaluation platforms, speech recognition applications, chatbots, machine translation systems, and generative AI can provide learners with personalized, interactive, and flexible learning opportunities. This article examines the opportunities and challenges associated with the use of Artificial Intelligence tools in foreign language teaching. The study focuses on the potential of AI to support personalized learning, develop language skills, provide immediate feedback, increase learner motivation, and reduce teachers’ administrative workload. At the same time, several challenges are identified, including concerns about academic integrity, inaccurate AI-generated information, data privacy, technological inequality, overdependence on technology, and the changing role of teachers. The analysis demonstrates that AI should not replace foreign language teachers but should function as a complementary pedagogical tool. Effective integration requires appropriate teacher training, digital literacy, ethical guidelines, and a balanced combination of AI-supported activities and traditional communicative approaches. The article concludes that responsible and pedagogically informed use of AI can contribute substantially to the quality and effectiveness of foreign language education.
