Аннотация

This article examines how synonyms function in English and Uzbek with attention to meaning, context, and everyday use. Although synonyms are often described as words with the same meaning, actual usage shows that they are rarely fully interchangeable. English developed a wide range of synonyms through long historical contact with other languages, while Uzbek generally relies on fewer lexical alternatives and makes stronger use of context and pragmatic cues. Using dictionary evidence, short textual examples, and findings from linguistic studies, the article shows that differences in register, tone, and cultural meaning play a decisive role in synonym choice. The analysis is intended to be practical and accessible, especially for students, teachers, and translators who work with both languages. It argues that successful use of synonyms depends less on memorizing lists of words and more on understanding how words behave in real communicative situations..
