BORROWING, CALQUING AND ADAPTATION IN THE TRANSLATION OF MOBILE COMMUNICATION TERMS INTO UZBEK

Abstract

The rapid expansion of mobile communication technologies has led to the widespread diffusion of specialized terminology across languages. Most mobile communication terms originate in English and enter other languages through various translation and borrowing mechanisms. This study investigates the linguistic processes involved in the translation of mobile communication terminology into Uzbek, focusing on borrowing, calquing, and adaptation. Drawing on terminology theory and contact linguistics, the research analyzes examples of commonly used mobile communication terms and identifies the dominant strategies used in their integration into Uzbek. The results demonstrate that borrowing remains the primary mechanism due to the technological origin of the terms, while calquing and adaptation contribute to semantic transparency and phonological integration. The study contributes to understanding the development of Uzbek technological terminology and highlights the need for systematic standardization of emerging lexical units.
