Abstract

This article analyzes contemporary urban planning approaches based on the principles of the mahalla. As a social unit, the mahalla embodies the principles of community cohesion, neighborhood relations, safety, and social integration. In modern urbanism, these principles are closely aligned with the concept of a “human-centered city.” The article compares the theoretical views of Jane Jacobs and Jan Gehl on urban life and relates their ideas to the structural characteristics of the mahalla. Furthermore, the conceptual possibilities of applying mahalla principles within Uzbek urban planning practices are explored..
