Abstract

Architecture in Uzbekistan from the 1930s to the 1990s represents a complex and internally contradictory process of facade transformation—from an ideologically determined representational surface to an autonomous architectural layer performing cultural, climatic, and urban-mediating functions. Within the framework of Soviet architectural policy, the facade proved to be simultaneously the most vulnerable and the most expressive element of the building, concentrating debates on the search for a “national” image and on the forms of its legitimation within all-Union artistic doctrines.
