THE PRAGMATIC FUNCTIONS OF INTERTEXTUAL REFERENCES AND ALLUSIONS IN DISCOURSE

Effective communication often extends beyond the immediate text, relying on the strategic deployment of Intertextual References and Allusions. This study analyzes the pragmatic functions of these linguistic devices, which presuppose a shared knowledge base between the writer and the reader (or speaker and listener). An Intertextual Reference is an explicit mention of a prior text (e.g., citing a specific quote or source), while an Allusion is an indirect, implied reference to a cultural, literary, or historical source. The analysis focuses on three key pragmatic effects: establishing solidarity and group membership, achieving economy of expression through condensation, and generating rhetorical irony or humor. Understanding these functions is critical for interpreting the depth of meaning, assessing the writer's ethos, and improving the overall rhetorical force of professional, political, and literary discourse. This study highlights how reliance on shared textual history shapes interpretation and communicative success.
