- EMBODIED TOPOGRAPHIES: A COGNITIVE SEMANTIC ANALYSIS OF SPATIAL STRUCTURE IN LITERARY NARRATIVE

In literary criticism, space has traditionally been treated as setting, a static backdrop against which the dynamic elements of plot and character development unfold. This dissertation argues for a fundamental reconceptualization: spatial structures in literary texts are primary cognitive constructs, dynamically generated through the interaction between the author's linguistic choices and the reader's embodied mind. It is said that space fundamental how and why of narrative meaning-making. By applying the theoretical framework of Cognitive Semantics, this paper will demonstrate that pre-linguistic image schemas and conceptual metaphors provide the underlying architecture for narrative progression, character psychology, and thematic resonance. Ultimately, this study contends that literary space functions as the essential interface for what we term "narrative embodiment," the process by which readers use their own bodily and perceptual experiences to simulate, comprehend, and emotionally invest in literature.
