INDIRECTNESS AND IMPLICATURE IN EVERYDAY ENGLISH COMMUNICATION

This paper explores the phenomenon of indirectness and conversational implicature as key pragmatic mechanisms in everyday English communication. Drawing on the theories of H. P. Grice and later developments in pragmatic studies, the paper investigates how speakers intentionally convey meanings beyond the literal content of theirutterances.Indirectness serves various communicative purposes, including politeness, face-saving, and social harmony. The study emphasizes how implicature allows interlocutors to interpret unstated intentions and infer contextual meanings, illustrating this with examples from authentic spoken discourse and digital communication. The findings demonstrate that indirectness is not merely a linguistic ornament but a vital element of cooperative interaction that reflects social, cultural, and cognitive dimensions of language use.
