Abstract

Gastroezofageal reflux disease (GERD) is one of the most common diseases of the digestive system affecting a significant number of people worldwide. According to statistics, its prevalence among the adult population ranges from 10% to 30% depending on the geographical region. GERD is characterized by the regular discharge of gastric contents into the esophagus, leading to a number of clinical manifestations, including heartburn, regurgitation, dysphagia, and chest pain. Along with typical symptoms, GERD can also cause serious complications that significantly worsen the quality of life and require a comprehensive approach to treatment. Among the most common complications are erosive esophagitis, esophageal strictures, pulmonary aspiration, Barrett's esophagus, and esophageal cancer. These complications develop against a background of chronic inflammation and damage to the esophageal mucosa, necessitating early diagnosis and adequate treatment.
