Abstract

Anecdotes are short humorous narratives that reflect cultural values, social norms, and collective experiences. From a linguistic perspective, anecdotes are particularly interesting because their interpretation often relies on pragmatic mechanisms such as context and presupposition. Context provides the situational and cultural framework necessary to understand the humor, while presupposition guides the audience’s expectations by conveying implicit assumptions. This study analyzes Uzbek anecdotes to demonstrate how context and presuppositional structures interact to create humor. The findings show that shared cultural knowledge, implicit assumptions, and situational context are essential for interpreting the hidden meanings in anecdotes. This research contributes to the fields of pragmatics, discourse analysis, and linguocultural studies by highlighting the mechanisms through which humor emerges in folklore narratives.
