Résumé

Language is a social and cultural phenomenon that evolves alongside human society. Every linguistic community develops strategies to express ideas in ways that align with its moral, cultural, and emotional norms. Euphemism — derived from the Greek euphemia, meaning “speaking well” — represents one of the most widespread and culturally loaded phenomena in human communication. [1]

Euphemisms enable speakers to discuss unpleasant or delicate topics without causing offence. They serve as a reflection of a society’s worldview and its system of values. As Allan and Burridge (1991) explain, euphemism acts as both a “shield and weapon,” protecting social harmony while maintaining politeness. [2]
