Résumé

This article examines the potentiality for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be meaningfully incorporated into foreign language courses. The article alludes to new modes of pedagogy that enable the student to develop global awareness, intercultural awareness, and the ability to question critically. The SDGs constitute a wonderful benchmark that may be utilized for connecting language learning with meaningful global issues such as inequality, sustainability, and peace. By including issues pertaining to SDG in the classroom under the guise of project-based learning, task-based learning, or online activity, the classroom for language is transposed to one where the development of responsible global citizens is nurtured. The argument is that an infusion of language learning with concerns regarding sustainability makes the student not only more motivated but communicatively better and socially responsible too. Examples from classroom practice are provided to demonstrate the potentiality for English lessons to be framed to allow for both language development as well as ethical consideration, earmarking the role played by language learning within the overall goal toward sustainable development.
