COGNITIVE REASONS WHY VERBS SHOW STRONGER GRADIENCE THAN NOUNS

The flexible nature of verb meanings leads to stronger gradience than nouns because their definitions change based on context. The research examines verb flexibility in meaning through studies of event representation and temporal and argument structure changes and abstract conceptualization. The prototype theory explains how central and peripheral members of semantic categories for verbs get organized. The graded structure of verb categories emerges from three main factors which include how often words appear and how much their meaning changes in different situations and how language patterns differ between languages. The understanding of verb gradience helps researchers in language education and dictionary creation and computer-based semantic analysis and psychological language studies to understand how people process flexible word meanings.
