MOUNTAINS AS POETIC SYMBOLS IN TURKIC FOLKLORE: THE CASE OF ALPOMISH

This article explores the mountain as a central poetic symbol in Turkic oral literature, building on Sh. Turdimov’s classification of mountains as both natural entities and mythic ancestors. Using the Alpomish dastan and Fazyl Yuldash variants, it analyzes repetitive refrains, imagery, and narrative placement to reveal how mountainous motifs structure heroism, sacred geography, and communal memory. The study demonstrates that refrains intensify performance, consolidate meaning, and sustain cultural identity continuity
