Abstract

Phytoplankton communities in the Jiltirbas Reservoir were investigated with an emphasis on diatoms (Bacillariophyta). Diatoms accounted for 32.2% of the total phytoplankton composition, representing 2 classes, 3 orders, 6 families, and 28 species or varieties. The dominant genera were Melosira, Fragilaria, Diatoma, and Synedra. In areas influenced by the KWS-1 and KWS-3 collectors and the Kazakhdarya Canal, Fragilaria crotonensis and Diatoma elongatum were the most abundant taxa, while Synedra ulna and S. tabulata prevailed in the tributaries and the dam-bounded lower sections of the reservoir. Phytoplankton communities exhibited low to moderate diversity and limited dominance. The findings confirm the meso-eutrophic state of the reservoir and demonstrate the potential of diatoms as effective bioindicators of ecological conditions..
