Abstract

This paper explores the lexical and semantic features of the concept of “love” in William Shakespeare’s poetic language. By analyzing his sonnets and selected plays, this study identifies the richness of lexical items used to express love, as well as the semantic nuances associated with romantic, platonic, and spiritual dimensions of the concept. Shakespeare’s language demonstrates a profound interplay between literal and metaphorical meanings, revealing the cultural and philosophical contexts of Elizabethan England. The research emphasizes the polysemy, metaphorical depth, and intertextuality of the term “love” in Shakespeare’s oeuvre, highlighting its role in shaping poetic imagery and emotional expression.
