Abstract

Idiomatic expressions represent a central component of figurative language and contribute substantially to learners’ communicative competence, particularly within English for Specific Purposes (ESP). This paper examines the role of idioms in ESP classrooms, emphasizing the cultural, metaphorical, and disciplinary knowledge necessary for understanding and producing idiomatic expressions. It further discusses the relevance of idioms in business English, where figurative expressions reflect the linguistic conventions of corporate communication. The article provides examples of commonly used business idioms and evaluates their pedagogical value for first-year economics students. Integrating idiomatic instruction enhances linguistic proficiency, intercultural awareness, and professional readiness, making it an essential component of ESP curricula.
