Abstract

 

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation, part of the electromagnetic spectrum with wavelengths shorter than visible light, has long been known for its capacity to inactivate microorganisms and influence biological tissues. In medicine, controlled application of UV — especially UVA and UVB — has been established as an effective modality for treating a variety of dermatological conditions, offering immunomodulatory, anti inflammatory, and antiproliferative effects. In addition, UV radiation (particularly UVC) plays a critical role in disinfection and sterilization in clinical settings, reducing the risk of nosocomial infections. This article reviews the physical and biological properties of UV radiation, summarizes its main medical uses (phototherapy for skin diseases, wound care, sterilization, and adjunctive therapeutic roles), discusses mechanisms of action and potential risks, and outlines guidelines for safe and effective application.
