EXPLORING INTENSIVE AND EXTENSIVE READING

This article examines the two major approaches to reading instruction—intensive and extensive reading—and explores how each contributes to language development. Intensive reading involves the close study of short, challenging texts with a focus on vocabulary, grammar, and detailed comprehension. In contrast, extensive reading emphasizes reading large amounts of easy, enjoyable material to develop fluency, confidence, and overall understanding. By comparing their goals, characteristics, advantages, and limitations, the article shows that both approaches play complementary roles in fostering effective reading skills. A balanced integration of intensive and extensive reading can support learners in developing both accuracy and fluency, leading to stronger literacy outcomes and greater motivation to read.
