THE PORTRAIT OF THE NEW WOMEN IN IRIS MURDOCH’S “THE FLIGHT FROM THE ENCHANTER”

Résumé

The two world wars, which were among the most significant events in 20th-century history that brought immense suffering to humanity, laid the foundation for the emergence of new ideas in the West. The erosion of traditional values led to the maturation of a free-thinking and ultra-modern society, fostering the spirit of feminism and giving rise to the image of the “new/modern woman” in literature. The purpose of this research is to analyze the female characters embodied in the versatile writer Iris Murdoch’s novel The Flight from the Enchanter through the prism of the modern woman.
